A Guide to Studying Dr. Edward Bach’s System of Emotional Healing

The Bach Flower Remedies are a system of 38 plant and flower preparations developed by Dr. Edward Bach, a British physician and researcher in the 1930s. Each remedy addresses a specific emotional state such as fear, uncertainty, loneliness, discouragement, or overwhelm.
Dr. Bach believed that emotional balance plays a key role in overall health and wellbeing. The remedies are designed to gently restore emotional harmony by helping us recognize and transform negative emotional patterns.

Dr. Bach believed the remedies should be simple enough for anyone to use. He taught that emotional balance is the foundation of health and that people should have the ability to care for themselves and their families.
Rather than creating a complicated medical system, Dr. Bach wanted his remedies to be accessible to ordinary people for everyday emotional challenges. They can be used at home for personal wellbeing, to support family and friends, or as part of professional practice.

People discover and study the remedies in many different ways. Some begin with books, others take courses, and some continue on to practitioner training. People often study the remedies for several reasons:
Personal self-care
Learning the Bach flower remedies helps us become more aware of our moods, feelings, and emotional patterns so that we do not feel controlled by them.
Supporting family and friends
Dr. Bach believed it is natural for us to want to help others. The remedies offer a safe and gentle way to support those we care about during times of stress or emotional difficulty.
Consulting with others
Some people choose to deepen their knowledge in order to help members of their community and provide consultations.
Complementary use in counseling, coaching, or holistic health
The Bach Flower Remedies work well alongside many other approaches to healing and personal development, including counseling, coaching, and holistic health practices.

Dr. Bach’s healing system was designed so that ordinary people could learn it for themselves.
Many people begin by reading Dr. Bach’s own writings, including:
• Heal Thyself
• The Twelve Healers and Other Remedies
The Twelve Healers is Dr. Bach’s foundational guide to the remedies and describes the emotional indications for each flower in his own words.
By studying these descriptions and observing emotional patterns in daily life, students gradually develop an understanding of which remedies may help different emotional states.
Self-study often forms the foundation of learning the remedies. Over time, however, many students find that structured courses help deepen their understanding.
Formal courses can help students:
• understand emotional patterns more clearly
• learn the remedies systematically
• recognize subtle differences between remedies
• develop confidence in selecting remedies
• learn how to support others effectively
Many students find that a self-paced online course is the easiest way to begin structured study. Our online Level 1 course includes short lessons, readings, and videos designed to help students learn how to use the remedies for themselves and for others.
Many students find a self-paced online home study course the easiest route to learn the remedies. We offer such an online class with short videos and readings that can fit into your schedule easily as you learn about how to use the remedies for yourself and others.

Some students feel called to take their study further and learn how to support others through consultations and deeper study of the remedies. Practitioner training focuses on developing a deeper understanding of the system and learning how to support others thoughtfully and responsibly through consultations.
• deeper study of remedy indications and emotional patterns
• consultation skills and case studies
• applying Dr. Bach’s philosophy in professional work
• ethical practice and responsible consultation
Students who complete practitioner training through Bach Flower Education receive a certificate recognizing their course of study. Like a diploma from a school, this certification belongs to the student and does not require annual renewal. Some graduates choose to join practitioner organizations for continuing education, professional support, or visibility, but participation is optional.
Today there are many books and courses on the Bach Flower Remedies. Some approaches have added layers of complexity to what Dr. Bach originally designed to be a simple and accessible system.
For this reason, many students choose to study with teachers who remain grounded in Dr. Bach’s original philosophy and methods.
One of the great joys of learning the remedies is that the learning never truly ends. As we continue observing emotional patterns in ourselves and others, we deepen our understanding of how the remedies apply in daily life.
Dr. Bach’s system may be simple, but it is also profound. For those who love helping others and encouraging self-care, the study of the remedies can continue to grow and unfold throughout a lifetime. Nearly a century after Dr. Edward Bach introduced the remedies, people around the world continue to study them as a simple way to understand emotional patterns and support emotional wellbeing.
